Sometimes, when we get all wrapped up in our doubts, fears and insecurities, we always come up with the idea of “I wish I was somebody else.”  More often than not, we think and believe that someone or rather, most people are better off than we are. The fact is, most people are even more messed up and more insecure than we are!

You spot a very attractive girl sitting by herself at a party, casually sipping on a glass of wine. You think to yourself, “She looks so perfectly calm and confident.” But if you could read her mind, you might just be amazed at what she’s thinking. Things like “Why I am sitting here all alone? Why don’t guys find me attractive? I don’t like my ankles, they look too skinny. I wish I were smarter.”

We look at a young successful business entrepreneur and say “Wow, he’s already made it. What’s he going to do now?” But he has issues just like everyone else.  He thinks to himself “I wonder why my friends won’t talk to me. Why is it so hard to find a girl that understands business?”

Isn’t it funny? We look at other people envy their looks, their finances, and their confidence.  We think they are perfect and wish we could trade places with them.  They look at us and think how they wish their life were simpler and easier. It is so easy to become so busy thinking about ourselves and how bad things are that we lose hope in ever becoming better. Letting ourselves get this far down is dangerous and counter-productive. Thinking about ourselves also prevents us from helping others. Everyone, no matter how successful, can always find ways to improve.

One key to self improvement is to LISTEN and TALK to a trusted friend. Find someone you are comfortable with and start evaluating your communication skills with each other. Ask questions like “do you think I am ill-mannered?” “Do I always sound so argumentative?” “Do I talk too loud?” “Does my breath smell?” “Do I ever bore you when were together?”  This is one way to work on improving your communication skills. The other person will obviously know that you are interested in improving. Be open to suggestions and be careful not to become defensive. Keep an open mind.

Before telling other people some ways on how to improve themselves, let them see that you constantly work on improving yourself.  You should also emphasize how important you think it is to always be looking for ways to improve. Self improvement helps makes us more confident. When we are confident, it is much easier to inspire others to follow in the same path.

We all have our insecurities, but it is important to remember that nobody is perfect. There will always be ways to improve our lives, but life does not need to be perfect for us to be happy with ourselves. You can love yourself and acknowledge that there are things you could do better. When we begin to improve ourselves, we then begin to feel contented and happy.

There are many ways to lose your sense of self-esteem and your sense of yourself. We are faced with problems everyday—many of which are beyond our ability to solve. And, sometimes, our self-esteem takes a hit. We get frustrated because we can’t fix the problem. But whatever happens, we should all try not to lose our own sense of self and what is really important. 

But how do we find our sense of self in the first place? So what does it take to be a cut above the rest? What can we do to get back on track? Can a week really make a difference? Try staring with these seven exercises. You’ll be surprised at how your outlook will change!

1. Know your purpose
Are you wandering through life with little direction - hoping that you’ll find happiness, health and prosperity? Identify your life purpose or mission statement.  This mission statement should be your guiding compass.  When you get off course, remember your mission statement and it will lead you to your truth north every time.

2. Know your values
What do you value most? Make a list of the top five things you value the most. Some examples are security, freedom, family, spiritual development, learning. As you set your goals- check your goals against your values. If the goal doesn’t align with any of your top five values - you may want to reconsider it or revise it.

3. Know your needs
Unmet needs can keep you from living authentically. Your basic needs: shelter, food, clothing must be met first—otherwise all your effort (conscious and subconscious) will be devoted to trying to meet these basic needs.

4. Know your passions
Do you know who you are and what you truly enjoy in life? Obstacles like doubt and lack of enthusiasm can hinder you. Decide what you truly want and do not let anything derail your chance to become the person you want to be. Express yourself and think about people that inspire you.

5. Live from the inside out
Increase your awareness of your inner wisdom by regularly reflecting in silence. Breathe deeply to quiet your distracted mind. For most of us it’s hard to even find the peace and quiet we want even in our own home. In my case I often just sit in a dimly lit room and play some classical music. Sometimes, the only quiet place is the bathroom! Try to find that quiet place to think and reflect, even if it is only for a few minutes.

6. Capitalize on your strengths
What are your positive traits? What special talents do you have? List three. If you get stuck, ask those closest to you to help identify these. Are you imaginative, witty, good with your hands? Find ways to express your authentic self through your strengths. You can increase your self-confidence and help others when you share what you know.

7. Serve others
When you live authentically, you may find that you develop an interconnected sense of being. When you are true to who you are, living your purpose you will find that giving of your talents to the world around you comes naturally. You give back by serving others. The rewards for sharing your gifts with others are immeasurable. 

Self-improvement is indeed one type of work that is worth it. The difference between leading a routine life and the life we have dreamed of lies within ourselves and our ability to continually change for the better. You have to start somewhere and these seven ideas should help you get the ball rolling.

What are vitamins, minerals, supplements and drugs?

MINERALS are found in plants. Plants get their minerals from the soil – soil gets minerals from water washing over rocks. For vitamins to do their job, they require minerals. Minerals must also be obtained from food or supplements.

SUPPLEMENTS are vitamins and minerals that have been extracted from a plant or created in a laboratory and put into a form that can be ingested and used by the body. They are effective supplements, ineffective supplements and hazardous supplements. Herbal supplements are not classified as drugs but as dietary supplements.

Most of the manufactured medicines we now have once came from animals and plants. Through the years, chemists isolated the life-saving or life-curing components and separated them from the harmful ones. This lead to the further drug research and drug development that lead to the production of a different variety of drugs for many ailments and conditions from synthetic sources. But still we have semi-synthetic drugs, as well as drug that more or less approximate more natural composition. Since herbal supplements are made from a mixture of crude herbs reduced into powder or gel form, and later on packaged as tablets and capsules, there is a possibility that life-threatening or at least body chemistry-altering components are still present, thus the expression of concern from the medical community.

Vitamins and minerals go from your stomach to your intestines. They then go through a very complex allocation system whereby the body distributes certain vitamins and minerals to parts of your body based on its own priority system.

If a nutrient is needed in a certain organ that if (the body) deems more important, it will take the nutrient from a less important organ, and allocate it to a more important organ. Sort of a “rob Peter to pay Paul” action. That’s why it is critical to maintain proper vitamin & mineral levels.

Vitamins and minerals in your body should not be viewed as independent substances, but rather as a cooperative network of nutrients working together. If one nutrient is missing, it throws the entire network of nutrients out of balance.

In his book Prescription for Nutritional Healing, James F. Balch says: “A deficiency of a vitamin or mineral will cause a body part to malfunction and eventually break down – and, like dominos, other body parts will follow.”

What do Vitamins and Minerals Do for You?

Illness and disease are not “caught.” One doesn’t catch cancer, heart disease or a cold. You create these ailments with deficiencies based on what you eat or don’t eat.

Vitamins & minerals are involved in the release of energy from digested foods. Strong, lasting energy levels are good indicators of healthy vitamin and mineral intake.

Skin clearness, tone, and elasticity; hair strength, thickness and color; fingernail strength, color and texture all depend on vitamins and minerals. Some people don’t look 50 years old at 30. Some look 30 at 50.

Is there a growing concern with the use of herbal supplements?

Yes. With the rising popularity of using and consuming anything herbal or organic is the proliferation of fake herbal supplements that threaten to endanger lives. If that’s the case, then why are herbal supplements given drug administration approvals? One way of ensuring the safety of the people is to have all candidate drugs, food, drinks, and dietary supplements registered with the proper authority. Otherwise, they would pose more risk with these things being sold in the black market for a hefty sum. We could ensure the quality and safety of herbal supplements if they get proper classification with the food and drug administration. Moreover, people may be able to file the proper complaints in the event a worsening of health condition is proven to be linked to the use of a particular herbal supplement.

Is using herbal supplements worth the risk?

Yes. It cannot be discounted that many who have tried herbal supplements experienced an improvement in their health—whether this is due to the herbals themselves or due to a placebo effect, as long as they do not worsen the condition of an individual, then using them is worth the risk. But of course, certain things must be considered before taking those herbal supplements

First of all, clear your condition with your doctor. Ask him/her if taking a particular herbal supplement is safe given your current health. People with heart, liver, or kidney trouble or malfunction, are usually not advised to take these, or at the minimum is to take these herbals in minimum amounts. All substances pass through the liver and kidney to be processed and filtered respectively. Kava, which is used to relieve people from stress, has been pulled out from the Canadian, Singaporean, and German markets because it contains substances that cause liver damage. Certain herbals such as Ephedra used for losing weight, contains chemicals with heart-inducing effects that can increase heart rate, which in turn can exhaust the heart and cause heart attacks in several documented cases by the American Medical Association.

No matter how the product pamphlet or the label of the bottle sounds about how it has been found to be helpful in certain health conditions, these herbal supplements are not therapeutic. So do not substitute these for the medications prescribed by your doctor for the treatment of certain diseases, or for the maintenance of blood pressure, lowering of blood sugar and cholesterol, and fight off infections.

Sit a while and listen as I explain these four rules. So here they are:

1. ”Drink” from the “everlasting cup” of life every day.

2. ”Steal” a moment to help someone that is in worse shape than you are even when no one is watching.

3. ”Swear” that you will be a better person today than yesterday and even better tomorrow.

4. And last, but never least, before you “lie” your head down at night thank God you live in America and have freedom to own your own business, be your own boss, and can help others every day.

So we begin our journey. Have you come across a person who is so naturally friendly that when you put them inside a room of strangers, they’ll be friends with almost everyone in no time? We call such people a people-person, someone so unbelievably nice and charismatic that they can charm anyone into doing anything.

A socially-empowered person achieves so much greatness, basically because of the people that catapult them to success. They earn the trust and all-out support of the people they have helped before. They never run out of help. They can do anything because they have the support of so many people. All because they know how to maximize their social potential!

See, if you know your social skills and you make use of them, you will reach self-empowerment. Self-empowerment is making a general overhaul in your life and turning yourself into a happier and more successful person. If you can be one of those people-persons, then there is no reason why you will not succeed. You just have to know how to start.

1. Be genuine.

Hypocrisy will just bring you all the way down. Be genuinely nice and interested in people. Once they perceive that you are a hypocrite with selfish intentions, you might as well say goodbye to self-empowerment.

2. Be the greatest listener that you can be.

To earn the love and trust of the people, listen to their problems and sympathize with them. Do not just hear them out, listen to them with your heart. Make eye contact when the person talks to you. Listen as if every word matters, because it does! Brownie points when they learn that you can be their confidante.

3. Laugh out loud.

Not that you force yourself to laugh for every joke cracked by someone, albeit you do not find it funny at all. This means finding humor in things and not being too darn serious. A person oozing with an awesome sense of humor attracts crowds and eventually, attracts success.

4. Don’t forget yourself.

In the process of fluttering around like a social butterfly, you might forget yourself, allowing everyone to push you around. Remember, love and value yourself before anyone else. If you deem yourself respectable and worthy of affection, people will flock to you and not trample on you.

5. Do random acts of kindness.

You don’t have to be a John Rockefeller and give your entire life savings to charity. Little acts of kindness matter the most, and this can be as simple as giving someone a surprise you-take-care card or helping someone cross the street. When we were kindergarten students, kindness was taught to us and greatly practiced. Now is the time to revive doing good deeds and this time, let them stay for good.

6. Contact your old friends.

Sad how some friendships are destined to goodbye, but thanks to technology, you can do something about it. Relive the good old days by flipping your yearbook and look for the great people whom you want to communicate with again. Adding these old friends to your roster of support peers will surely make you feel good all over.

7. Develop your personality.

Are you grouchy, grumpy and generally down? Whoa, you can’t go through life like that. Get rid of those bad traits and habits that perpetually hamper your growth. And really, who wants a grouchy friend anyway?

8. Be confident.

Be able to stride to the other corner of the room and introduce yourself to people with that winning smile of yours. Just remember: be confident, not arrogant.

9. Practice control.

When angry, don’t snap at anyone. Never throw a tantrum. Stay calm and collected. Be adult enough to take control of situation and transform your anger into something more productive and passive. As soon as people think your anger goes to volcanic proportions easily, they will find it hard to come to you.

10. Keep nurturing your relationships.

Your relationship with your family, friends and significant others is too precious. You should not neglect it no matter what happens. Go out and have fun with them. Do things together. Happiness will never fly from your side as long as the people who matter the most are close to you.

In the end, using people for self-empowerment means becoming a better and more lovable person.
